In his first days in office, Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York’s 16th congressional district is already making waves with his approach to dealing with the Republican establishment. In a “talking point” sent out by his office this week, Bowman cites “Nazi Republicans” as the reason why he will not seek to make compromises with the GOP.
Bowman’s talking point is a direct attack on what he has referred to as the “extremist” views of the Republican Party. According to a statement issued by his office, Bowman believes that the Republican Party is in a “dire state” and that it is “alarmingly open to bigotry, racism, and dismissal of basic human rights.” He also cited the fact that many of the GOP’s elected officials have pursued policies that have had “devastating consequences” on the American people.
In the statement, Bowman makes it clear that he is unwilling to follow the GOP’s lead when it comes to policy. He said that he finds “it nearly impossible to imagine any compromise between what’s right and what’s wrong.” His words come on the heels of a similar statement from Rep. Ilhan Omar, who slammed the Republican Party for its “policy of hate” and accused them of “fueling white supremacy and *Nazism* in the United States.”
It’s evident that the newly-elected Democrats are not afraid to take a stand against the party’s right-wing policies and rhetoric. It appears that Bowman’s office has drawn a hard line in the sand when it comes to the Republican Party. With the 2020 election results still fresh in everyone’s mind and the future of the country up for debate, Bowman’s statement could be a sign of things to come for the next few years of politics.
