As the holiday season approaches, Christmas is normally a time of joy and celebration. Unfortunately, in Bethlehem this year, joy and celebration is unlikely. With war raging in nearby Gaza, Christmas is effectively cancelled for the people of Bethlehem.
The crisis in Gaza has resulted in almost no movement between the two territories, effectively cutting Bethlehem off from the outside world. This includes a ban on Christian pilgrims who would normally flock to the city to celebrate the holiday. The hotels in Bethlehem, which would normally be packed with visitors during Christmas, are nearly deserted.
Worse still, Israeli troops are heavily patrolling the area, with further restrictions blocking access to the Church of the Nativity. This is a huge disappointment for local merchants, as Christmas brings in much-needed annual revenue.
The suppression of Christmas spirit has already caused widespread unrest in the Bethlehem region. Protesters have taken to the streets, calling for the lifting of the restrictions imposed by the Israel occupation forces. The Israeli military, meanwhile, has responded with airstrikes, further intensifying the already-escalated violence.
It is hard to tell how long the war will last, or what its long-term effects will be. But for the people of Bethlehem, one thing is certain: Christmas will likely not be merry this year. Instead of joy and celebration, there will be silence and sorrow. As the people of Bethlehem pray for peace, let us also remember to extend our support and love, that they may find hope and comfort in these difficult times.
