An alarming discovery by California regulators has sparked an investigation into Mattress Overstock, a company selling mattresses at Costco. The California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation has found that nearly 48,000 mattresses sold at the big box store may have been exposed to mold.
According to the Bureau, the issue was first discovered when more than 27,000 complaints were filed to the company, as customers began noticing rust spots and musty odors on their mattresses. After further investigation, it was found that the mattresses had been stored in an unattended storage facility that had a high risk of mold or mildew contamination.
Mattress Overstock has since removed the mattresses from the Costco stores and is offering a refund to any customers affected by the issue. The company has also committed to improving its storage practices and has hired a third-party consultant to investigate the issue. “We take the safety and quality of our mattresses very seriously and we are committed to providing a quality product to our customers,” said a spokesperson for the company.
Costco, meanwhile, has also stated that they are working with Mattress Overstock to address the issue and have quickly removed the mattresses in question from the store shelves. In a statement, the store said they are “working to ensure that our customers are satisfied with the products they purchase from us.”
The Bureau, however, has warned customers to check their mattresses for any signs of mold or mildew before buying them from any store, regardless of the vendor. They also said that they are working with Mattress Overstock to address the issue and make sure that these kind of incidents will not happen in the future.
