The current state of the United States-Mexico border is a troubling indicator for the incoming Biden Administration. In 2020, record high levels of border crossings were reported, and this is something that Joe Biden will have to grapple with in the lead up to the 2024 Presidential Election.
The issue of a rapidly growing number of border crossings is twofold. On one hand, it is an indicator of the worsening conditions in Mexico and Central America that are driving people to seek coveted asylum or permanent residence in the United States. While the US must be compassionate towards those who are in dire need, there is a significant burden on the border patrol and security officials tasked with ensuring that the influx is properly managed and regulated.
In addition, the number of border crossings reflect a lack of confidence in the US immigration system, and how the current incarnation of it is too lenient. As of late, the influx of undocumented immigrants along the US-Mexico border has put the issue of illegal immigration at the forefront of many political and economic debates. It is clear that in order for the Biden Administration to succeed at managing and reducing the number of border crossings, they must ensure that their immigration policies reflect a need for legal and well-managed immigration.
In the 2024 Presidential Election, Biden must be sure to demonstrate to all Americans that he is aware of the importance of regulation and oversight at the US-Mexico border. In addition, he must ensure that a humane and efficient immigration system is put in place, one that will make Americans feel secure about their own safety and security, while upholding the values of a nation which continues to desirable to many immigrants around the world. If Biden is able to deliver on this goal, then he will give himself the best chance of winning the next election.
