A recent report by X-Probe has discovered that Vietnam attempted to target U.S. government officials by attempting to hack into their personal social media accounts.
The report found that a group of hackers from Vietnam created hundreds of false accounts on Twitter and other popular social media networks in order to target U.S. government officials. The hackers used the false accounts to send messages to the officials, designed to entice them to click on links containing malicious code or to follow hackers controlled accounts. If the U.S. officials had clicked on any of these links, their computers and accounts could have been seized and used for espionage.
X-Probe discovered that the hackers were able to successfully gain access to some of the accounts of U.S. government officials, but the officials were unaware of their presence as the hackers had disguised their malicious activities. The hackers had also used the false accounts to direct individuals to a website in order to spread malware.
The report found that the hackers were able to spread malware on a global scale and had successfully targeted numerous individuals. X-Probe believe that the hackers were sponsored by the Vietnamese government in order to gain access to confidential information about U.S. government officials. The report has said that the Vietnamese government has denied any involvement in the hacking activities.
X-Probe has issued a warning to U.S. government officials to be wary of online activities and to be vigilant when clicking on any links or sharing any personal information online. The report also said that governments need to take steps to increase their cybersecurity measures and to ensure that hackers do not gain access to confidential or sensitive information.
