High Stakes Bet As Intel Executive Doubles Down Amid Stock Rout

Lip Bu Tan is putting his own money where his mouth is during one of the most turbulent periods in Intel’s history. According to recent SEC filings, the executive used his family trust to purchase 150,000 additional shares on November 2, spending roughly 9.7 million dollars. This move comes immediately after the company experienced its worst single day of trading since 1974, when shares plummeted nearly 29 percent following a bleak fourth quarter forecast and warnings about a lingering slump in the PC market.

This latest acquisition marks a daring strategy of buying the dip, though previous attempts have proven costly. Since August, Tan has poured nearly 20 million dollars into the company, yet much of that capital has evaporated as the stock price slid toward 58 dollars from a September peak of around 127 dollars. His initial August investment alone is currently down about 39 percent, contributing to an overall paper loss of approximately 4.8 million dollars across his recent positions.

The timing of these trades highlights a volatile period for the chipmaker, which is struggling with manufacturing constraints and missed revenue targets. Adding to the corporate stress, an explosion at a plant in Israel recently claimed two lives and caused significant operational shutdowns, costing the firm hundreds of millions in potential revenue. Despite these headwinds and a general analyst consensus that suggests caution, Tan appears convinced that the current valuation represents a bottoming out rather than a freefall.

While his recent luck has been poor, Tan isn’t entirely unfamiliar with winning bets on Intel stock. Records show he made a substantial purchase back in March 2025 at far lower prices, meaning some parts of his portfolio remain highly profitable even as his newer stakes bleed red ink. For now, he seems willing to absorb short term losses in exchange for what he hopes will be long term recovery for the semiconductor giant.
